Modern Kintsugi with Emi Joyce

Kintsugi (金継ぎ, gold joinery) is the Japanese craft of repairing ceramics. Fractures are no longer weak points, but beautiful elements. Mended breakages are celebrated with gold instead of being hidden. This philosophy is often taught as embracing imperfections in our life, the beauty of human flaws. While the traditional method is more challenging and requires precaution with the materials, the “modern” Kintsugi method that will be taught in this class uses accessible materials and is ideal for beginners. This class will be an introduction to the art of Kintsugi.

PAST EVENT (2023) Lantern Making Workshop with Julie Paschkis

In 2021, during a heat wave, Lis & Livie drove down to Edison, WA for a paper lantern making workshop with artist Julie Paschkis in the Edison Granary Building. This was one of the workshops that got us thinking about the types of classes we wanted to host on our farm. At the beginning of the class Julie shared images and books full of patterns for students to choose from if they wanted some inspiration. After some experimentation on test paper, everyone got to work with their scissors, exacto knives, awls, and rivets, to create their unique lanterns. Some students created intricate stories with the scenes they depicted on their lanterns, others were free-form and organic, some were animal themed. We came out of the class inspired, relaxed, and ready to make more lanterns at home. We both loved the class and knew we wanted to host a workshop on the farm with Julie. Luckily she agreed and we’re very excited to have her here in October!
