Visible Mending and Darning Workshop with Erin Eggenburg

Join us for a full day dedicated to learning the art of mending with Erin Eggenburg! We love mending our clothing in the fall when it’s time to pull out the sweaters and take stock of the holes that we might have worn into our work pants over the summer
In this class, you’ll learn 2 types of mending: darning for knits and sashiko-inspired visible mending for denims and wovens.

Darning on knits
Fix your tattered socks, sweaters, and knit textiles with a simple woven type of mending known as darning! You’ll learn 3 different types of darning, and practice each technique on a provided sampler. Bring your knits in need of darning, and leave with a plan for mending.

  • learn what darning is

  • gain insight into darning materials and how to choose materials to use for specific darning projects

  • create a darning sampler using 3 darning techniques

Materials (provided): darning needles (or yarn needles), thread and yarn, embroidery hoop and sampler material

Visible Mending on denims and wovens

An information packed, sashiko inspired visible mending for denim & wovens workshop. With hands-on practice, you’ll learn this simple, but useful patterned stitching technique for patching denim and other woven textiles. This is a great class for beginners and seasoned hand stitchers alike with an interest in how mending can be both functional and beautiful.

  • a presentation of mending materials and how they are used in practice

  • a hands-on tutorial to practice and complete a patch, in the sashiko-style embroidery technique.

  • an explanation of how to repair specific types of mends (crotch/butt patching, threadbare areas, torn pockets, worn knees)

  • an opportunity to ask questions about your specific repair

Materials (provided)

denim patch for practice, sashiko needles, sashiko thread and pearl cotton, beeswax tin, printed outline
